À la carte! – Freedom Goes Through the Stomach“À la carte!” is a historical drama set in France during the final months of the Ancien Régime (before the French Revolution). The passionate but headstrong chef Pierre Manceron clashes with the nobility when he breaks the rigid rules of etiquette and serves an unconventional amuse-bouche. After being dismissed, he returns to his hometown, where—together with a mysterious student and his son—he develops the idea of a middle-class restaurant: a place of equality where guests can freely choose from a menu. The film combines a passion for food with social change and explores how eating and enjoyment become a democratic achievement. Despite some didactic moments, it captivates with charming imagery, witty dialogue, and a tribute to French culinary culture.
