Excursion to the Symbol of Freedom

The Menschen Miteinander Oberes Enztal e.V. association will visit Hambach Castle in the Palatinate on October 10, 2026. This excursion is part of this year’s “Festi-wall for Peaceful Coexistence” and is open to anyone interested. Since its founding, the association has championed democratic values and diversity. These values are reflected in the principles that Hambach Castle stands for.

Hambach Castle is considered a living site of German and European democratic history and is one of the most important tourist destinations in Rhineland-Palatinate.On May 27, 1832, the “Hambach Festival” was held there, during which 30,000 citizens demanded freedom of the press, freedom of assembly, and freedom of expression, as well as greater civil rights, religious tolerance, national unity, and European solidarity. Since then, the “Hambach Festival” has been celebrated as the birth of German democracy.The Hambach Castle Foundation preserves the memory of this event and makes it clear in its mission statement that our democracy was not only won through struggle and struggle, but must constantly be defended, shaped, and lived out anew. It is committed to the free democratic basic order of the Federal Republic of Germany and to democracy as a way of life that requires action grounded in values. It therefore advocates for the unconditional respect for the dignity of every human being, for individual freedom and shared responsibility, and for solidarity within our society and within Europe. It advocates for respect and tolerance in our interactions with one another, for cultural participation and inclusion, for diversity of opinion and controversy in debate, and for moral courage and determination in rejecting misanthropic, anti-democratic, and chauvinistic views.
