The Great Bannwald Tour

The Bannwald in Baden-Württemberg is considered the “primeval forest of tomorrow.” This is true if one equates “wilderness”—uninfluenced by humans and left to its own devices—with primeval forest. The “Wildseemoor” Bannwald is a decommissioned forest area, partly consisting of former cultivated forest. Large areas there have been developing without human influence for nearly 100 years.

On site, participants can see for themselves how the forest develops without human intervention. The “Wildseemoor” protected forest reveals many facets: ancient giant trees that bring to life the cycle of growth and decay in a natural world that needs no humans. Landscapes with tree stands killed by bark beetles—which appear almost apocalyptic—also unfold before the observer. Depending on one’s perspective, such a forest can fascinate or alarm, confirm existing views, or inspire entirely new questions.
