The Forest Through the Ages

A Historical Forest Hike from Yesterday to Tomorrow: The timber-rich forest in the northern Black Forest has shaped people’s lives for centuries—and has, in turn, been shaped by humans themselves. The demands placed on the forest are constantly changing—just like history, societies, technological developments, and digitalization. In the past, the forest was the most important economic factor, primarily serving as a source of timber and grazing land. Yesterday, it served as a major tourist attraction. Today and in the future, many see it as a vital ally in the fight against species extinction and climate change. The traces of human forest management, natural processes, the consequences of extreme weather events, and one-sided forestry interventions have remained visible over the long term. Take a peek into the forest’s history book.
